Glass Gorge The original route for dray carts delivering copper to Parachilna, the road to Glass Gorge is a tricky but picturesque 4WD track. Wakarla Glass Gorge Tours This Aboriginal owned and operated tour company includes a guided walk into the magnificent Glass Gorge, plus a number of Dreaming stories connected to this land. BELTANA 45 kilometres from Parachilna map reference B3, page 17 On the main route from Hawker to Leigh Creek, Beltana is worth a detour. The largely deserted town is now a State Heritage Area. Some of the great inland explorations left from Beltana, and a repeater station for the Overland Telegraph was established here. Beltana was the base for sheep and camel breeding giants, Thomas Elder and Robert Barr Smith. The Woolshed Museum at Beltana Station contains over 130 photos and items dating back to 1860. Entry is free. Attractions Beltana Art Gallery The gallery features a unique rock labyrinth. Look out for the open flag. Warraweena Conservation Park Previously a working station, thirteen colonies of Yellow-footed Rock wallabies have been sighted at the conservation park and also one very rare plant, Menzel’s Wattle. Railway station The town railway station was completed in 1881; however, in 1956, the Leigh Creek line was opened and the Beltana Railway Station was closed down. Police station A mounted policeman was appointed to Beltana in 1879 and this historic stone building was completed in 1881. Beltana Station Beltana Station was one of the region’s most significant properties in the 19th century. It now offers family-friendly accommodation, a woodshed museum/café and camel safaris during the main tourism season. Old school The first school in Beltana was opened in 1878 to serve the town’s 31 children. Leigh Creek coal train Pull in south of the entrance to Leigh Creek to catch the coal train as it rumbles past. Read about the town's history and the coal field, and even catch glimpses of the mine in action. LEIGH CREEK CARAVAN PARK could be mined. Almost daily, the mine fills a train with nearly 10,000 tonnes of coal bound for the Port Augusta Power Station.
